Czech School of Los Angeles
Class registration, a school calendar, and news in one bilingual site.

About the client
The Czech School of Los Angeles has taught Czech to children, youth, and adults since 2010. It operates under the patronage of American Sokol Los Angeles and is run largely by volunteers.
Project need
A volunteer-run school handles a full term of registrations every year, and most of that work was happening over email. Parents asked the same questions repeatedly because the answers were not written down anywhere public.
There was also a language problem. Some families speak Czech, others speak only English, and maintaining two separate sites was never realistic for a small volunteer team.
Approach
Registration became the primary action on the site. Parents can sign up for a term directly instead of exchanging emails, which removes most of the administrative back and forth.
I added an events calendar covering the school year so families can see term dates, sessions, and community events in one place.
Rather than building two sites, I kept both languages in one, so the volunteers maintain a single set of pages. That decision was about sustainability. A bilingual site only works long term if updating it does not double anyone's workload.
The whole site is editable by the team without developer involvement, since volunteer schedules do not line up with mine.
Result
Families can register and check the calendar without emailing anyone. Volunteers spend less time answering repeat questions, and both Czech-speaking and English-speaking parents get the same information.
