Sokol Los Angeles
An events calendar and online membership for a community organization founded in 1909.

About the client
American Sokol Los Angeles is a Czech, Moravian, and Slovak social, gymnastic, and educational organization founded in 1909. It is open to anyone interested in the culture, and it is the organization behind the Czech School of Los Angeles.
Project need
An organization founded in 1909 has a credibility problem in reverse. People assume it is a historical society rather than something they could join this month.
In practice the calendar is busy: hikes, walking tours, theater outings, a run for Czechoslovak Independence Day, art workshops, and camping trips with the Czech school. None of that was visible.
Approach
I built the site around the calendar, since a full calendar is the clearest evidence that an organization is active.
Every event lists its date, time, and venue with a map link, so deciding to attend and knowing how to get there happen in one step rather than requiring an email.
Past events stay published rather than being removed. For someone deciding whether to join, a record of what actually happened over the last year is more persuasive than a description of what the organization is.
Membership pricing is stated openly with signup online, and the site also covers the elected board, the Czech classes run under Sokol's patronage, newsletter signup, and contact details.
Result
A long established organization now reads as an active one. Newcomers can see what is happening, join in a few clicks, and find the location.
